Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a relatively common psychiatric anxiety disorder. It affects more than two percent of the population. OCD is characterized by obsessions or persistent unwanted and distressing thoughts and compulsions or the patient's repeated actions in an attempt to control and neutralize the compulsion. These compulsions can affect the patient's work, personal relationships, and social life. Doctors and scientists have yet to figure out what causes this condition but they claim that it is directly linked to abnormal levels of serotonin in the brain. OCD is treated with medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). |
